Blake Morrison (Colin Firth) is a happily married middle-aged guy who has always had a troubled relationship with his father, Arthur (Jim Broadbent). After discovering his dad has a terminal illness, Blake flashes back to all the moments in his life when Arthur didn't live up to the idealistic vision his son had of him, especially in regards to a strange woman (Sarah Lancaster) who may or may not have born Arthur's illegitimate child.
